These two cuties got engaged this evening at the beach in Isle of Palms! Matt was visiting us for the Thanksgiving holidays here in South Carolina. Originally he was planning on proposing while going kayaking, but when Jesikah kind of guessed it, he surprised her at the beach instead.
Jesikah and Matt have known each other since they were kids. We moved to Washington in June 2003, and shortly thereafter, we met the Mitchell family at church. I liked Matt right away and thought he would be an awesome friend for Alex (then second graders). I got them together as often as possible because Matt was fun and such a good kid. They played on soccer teams, basketball teams, football teams and did tons on Cub Scout and church activities together as well as birthday parties, Friday night hangouts and much more. They were best friends. We became good friends with the Mitchell family too and had many good times together.
Jesikah and Matt never really interacted much except in a big brother/little sister kind of way. Little did I know, she secretly had a little crush on him way back then. In 2008, we moved from Washington to Tennessee. We kind of lost touch with the Mitchell family although we still exchanged yearly Christmas cards and I was in touch with J’Nette a few isolated times.
After high school graduation and before they left on their missions, Alex called Matt just to catch up and find out a little more about how life had been since he left. Then they both headed out on missions for 2 years. After they got back, they both went to BYU in Utah. Alex thought it would be fun to room with Matt, so I got in touch with his mom to find out where he was living. We were able to get them across the hall from each other in the Heritage Halls. There they rekindled their friendship and decided to room together for the next two years in Monson Apartments and then The Colony.
During this time, we moved back to Washington state and Jesikah graduated high school and went on an 18 month mission. When she arrived home in April 2019, Alex and Matt had just finished their 3rd year of college and were rooming together at the Colony. Alex arranged for Jesikah to also have an apartment at the Colony and he was so excited to have his sister there. He planned lots of fun activities for them to do. They were together almost everyday. Alex and Matt and Jesikah became a threesome of friends and hung out all summer and had lots of adventures. During this time, Jes and Matt started liking each other but took things very slow. They've dated on and off since August 2019, but mostly on. Alex wasn't thrilled at first that it went from a threesome of friends to him being a "third wheel", but he is now very excited to have his best friend in the family.
We are very happy for Jesikah and Matt. We couldn't have picked a better guy!
