Disappointments

Does it ever seem like one of your children has to go through more trials than the others?  Sometimes I think that has been the case with Alex.  He seems to have more hard things to go through, but he is stronger because of it I think.

A few weeks ago, he tried out for the school soccer team.  He really wanted to make the team!  There were 40 kids who tried out and they were to select 16.  Try-outs were supposed to be two days...at the end of two days, the coach posted a list naming the players who made the team.  Alex's name was on the list, but there were 24 kids on the list instead of 16.  Well, the coach called another day of try-outs to weed out 8 more.  At the end of that day, he still couldn't decide so he told them all to come back after the weekend for another try-out.  Alex had done very well in the try-outs thus far, and we were pretty confident that he would make the team.  Well, over the weekend, he went on a hike for scouts and carried a 25 lb pack.  On Tuesday his ankles were very stiff and sore and he was not able to run or perform as well as normal.  The sad thing was, that was the decision day, and he got cut from the team.  I felt bad for him.  I know he was disappointed.  That makes it 2 years in a row that he tried out and didn't make the team. :(  I personally think he should have made it!  He really is a very good soccer player, but his performance that last day wasn't up to his highest potential.  I think the coach tried hard to make a fair decision though.  Alex handled the disappointment pretty well.  He is having a good year this year and has a good group of friends at church and at school.  That helps!

On another note, Alex came home this past Monday and told me that one of his teachers, Mr. Ramsey, had died over the Easter weekend.  Mr. Ramsey had missed a couple of days the previous week, and had a hard attack over the weekend and passed away.  Alex had a hard day.  He was his favorite teacher.  He taught History and Alex really enjoyed his class.  What a hard thing to go through!  He had him for homeroom, and when they got to school they were taken to a separate room and the principal explained what had happened.  It was so sad.  Eric and I had talked to Mr. Ramsey on a couple of occasions at parent conferences.  He loved Alex.

That is some sad news. Disappointments in life are never fun, but especially when you're young. We are rooting for you Alex.
