Fort Donelson in the Winter

While James, Melanie, and Ben were here, we were looking for cheap entertainment (cause who has any money 3 days before Christmas).  Fort Donelson was the perfect place to go on Tuesday.  We had a nice day with a high of 58 degrees---it was perfect weather for walking around at each stop on the driving tour.  Let me just say...what a different experience from the last time we went with my parents in July.  That was the day it reached 100 degrees with humidity right up there too.  We all thought we would die each time we got out of the A/C in the car.  We were actually able to enjoy it this time, and enjoy the beauty of the winter too.  I thought the river and the trees were beautiful, and I even learned more the second time around.

Dirt and log trenches

The kids thought these deep trenches were pretty fun...especially since they were filled with dry leaves

Alex enjoying nature.  He was such a nice boy this day and helped everyone get along and play together.  The kids had a great time together, and it was mostly because of Alex's great attitude.

Tessa is ready to jump in.

And Jarem loved the leaves too

While the kids were playing the leaves, the adults were reading about the history.

The small cabin that represents the soldier's lodging

James, the kids, and I down by the river by one of the river batteries.

James and Ben checking out the batteries

The river was beautiful

The kids all on one battery...I love the way the trees reflect in the water in this picture.

The kids walking by the river enjoying the outdoors

Alex was so helpful when Jarem was tired of walking, he lifted him on his shoulders.  He helped everyone get along.

Jarem shooting the cannon while everyone else covers their ears.

No hands!

I thoroughly enjoyed the day with my siblings and my kids.  We planned to stop at Rick's BBQ on the way home, but after two failed attempts at finding it, we stopped at "The Dip" in Dover and got burgers and shakes instead.  It was good.
