A Nice Surprise!

Eric and I went out to dinner last night at one of our favorite restaurants, Longhorn. They have the best steaks and their chicken is great too. My favorite side is the sweet potato with butter, cinnamon and sugar. But anyway, when we were seated, the hostess seated us right next to a table where the two builders of our house and their wives were having dinner. Well, we said hello and joked for a second and then went to our table and had our dinner without much other interaction.

When it came time to pay, the waitress told us that our bill had been "taken care of". As it turns out, John and Grayson (our builders) had paid our bill. We were very pleasantly surprised. How many builders do you know that even want to acknowledge you or make eye contact when you see them outside their work, let alone pay your bill at a restaurant. We were just really impressed at this random act of kindness.

It just made us really appreciate the type of people that they are. When we were trying to decide on who should build our house, one of the realtors we talked to told us that 3 other builders were already established in this neighborhood and well known. When we told her we were thinking about Crabbe Construction, she discouraged us from going with them because she just "didn't know anything about them". Well, as it turns out, the other 3 builders in this neighborhood have fallen on hard times, and won't even respond to any warranty claims. We have neighbors who have had to send certified mail and threaten lawsuit in order for their builders to take care of any problems with their houses. Although our house hasn't been perfect, our builders always respond quickly and come back again, if necessary, to make sure our warranty calls are more than adequately taken care of.

They even go over and beyond, for example, when they had to fix a drainage problem in our backyard, they offered to sod a portion of our backyard for our trouble. They have good sub-contractors who not only fix the problem, but go the extra mile in taking care of any other minor thing that may have been related to something they did.

I love stories like this! I have had this done to me before and it leaves you feeling "warm." We have also done this to others and it feels even better.
I had taken my kids to lunch one day and we saw missionaries out to lunch. We stopped and said our quick hellos and then picked up their tab (which our waitress thought I was trying to pick up on them- until I explained who they were). We never told them it was us- but my kids still talk about that until this day. Another act we like to do is when we go through a toll booth- pay for the person behind us- it is so fun to see their expression.

That's really awesome that your builders care about the people they've built houses for. Seems like that is pretty unusual these days. Also, I've never been to a Longhorn restaurant so that's good to know you like it! We'll have to try it out sometime.
